All about Otoplasty
Otoplasty is a cosmetic Plastic Surgery procedure that
involves adjusting the size, shape, or position of the ears.
Otoplasty also known as cosmetic ear surgery can correct the
structural abnormalities in the ear that are present at birth or develop over
time, as well as the misshapen ears that are caused by injury. This procedure
can create a more natural shape for the ears while bringing balance and
proportion to the face and ears.
If you have disfigured or protruding ears that are bothering
you, otoplasty can be a great option for correcting your ear structure.
There are several different techniques for otoplasty and
they include:
·
Ear
pinning. This otoplasty technique involves drawing protruding ears closer
to the head.
·
Ear
augmentation. This technique increases the size of the outer ear for
individuals who feel that their ears are too small or their ears have not
completely developed.
·
Ear
reduction. When the ears are larger than normal it is known as macrotia.
Individuals with macrotia can opt to undergo otoplasty to reduce the size of
their ears.
Otoplasty can also be done on individuals who have
previously undergone the procedure but are unsatisfied with the results.
Good Candidate for
Otoplasty
Children who are good candidates for otoplasty are:
·
Healthy without any chronic ear infections or
life-threatening conditions
·
5 years old or older which is when the ear
cartilage is stable enough for correction
·
Able to communicate well
·
Cooperative
Teenagers and adults who are good candidates for otoplasty
are:
·
Healthy individuals without any life-threatening
illness or medical condition that can impair healing
·
Nonsmokers
·
Realistic individuals with specific goals for
their ear correction surgery
The Procedure
Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure and is done under local
anesthesia, intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia. It can take between
1-3 hours depending on the complexity of the procedure.
Correction of protruding ears involves using surgical techniques
to increase or create the antihelical fold (located just inside the rim of the
ear) and to reduce the enlarged conchal cartilage (the deepest and largest
concavity of the external ear). Incisions for otoplasty are usually made on the
back surface of the ear. When the incisions are made in front of the ear, they
are typically made within its natural folds to hide them. The newly shaped
cartilage is created and secured in place by internal, nonremovable sutures.
The incisions are then closed by external stitches.
The techniques used are tailor-made to meet individual needs
and avoiding distorting the other ear structures and the natural appearance of
the ears.
Recovery and Results
Following otoplasty, you will experience some discomfort but
it can be eased with pain medications. You may also experience an itchy feeling
under the bandages, however, the bandages should not be removed for any reason
at all as this may interfere with the recovery and the results. The bandages
protect the ears from trauma and support their new position during the initial
healing phase.
You will be given specific instructions on how to take care
of your ears during the recovery period which will include:
·
Avoid scratching or touching your ears
·
Do not sleep or rest on your ears
·
Avoid clothing that you have to pull over your
neck
Ear surgery results are visible almost immediately in cases
of protruding ears. The surgical scars are well hidden either behind or in the
natural creases of the ears.
