What is Periareolar Breast Augmentation?

Periareolar breast augmentation is an invasive cosmetic technique that enhances breast size to give a fuller chest with better cleavage. This traditional approach is safe and reliable for correcting hypoplastic breasts with ptosis.

Although there are various incision techniques for breast augmentation, a periareolar incision is widely accepted for providing better access while placing breast implants.

This blog discusses the approach of periareolar breast augmentation in Dubai and what you can expect from it.

What Is It?

Periareolar augmentation mammoplasty (donut or circumareolar technique) increases the breast size and shape by placing an incision on the breast areola which is then used to create breast pocket over or under the chest muscle. The areola is a round, dark, and a textured area around the nipple. This procedure involves a semi-circular incision on the areola's border thus allowing the scar to be camouflaged between the breast and nipple.

As the incision is close to the site of implant placement, it allows the Plastic Surgeon to fully monitor the breast tissue and the surgery to control the bleeding and position the implant precisely. Moreover, this incision can be reused in case of future breast surgeries.

The procedure is ideal for those who have natural dense breast tissue. Alternatively, breastfeeding patients or ones planning to expand their family in near future are not suitable candidates for this surgery. It should be noted that this surgery may or may not result in some degree of loss of nipple sensation.

What to Expect?

Patients can expect the following benefits from this approach.

· Perky, natural-looking breasts

· Increased size and shape of the breast

· Reduced drooping of the breasts

· Camouflaged scar along the darker pigmentation and texture of the areola

· Precise placement of implants

· Reduced chances of displacement of implants

· Both saline and silicone implants can be used

· Enhanced self-confidence

Procedure

Periareolar breast augmentation surgery requires general anesthesia and takes around two hours to complete.

Consultation

Before the surgery, you consult with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to address your cosmetic concerns regarding breasts. Your Plastic Surgeon examines the breast tissue and discusses different incisions and approaches. They also review your medical history and explain the ins and outs of the procedure.

Procedure

Your Plastic Surgeon first marks breasts for the incision points while you are in an upright position with arms on the side. The markings are made in semi-circular shape along the bottom edge of the areola; about 3cm long.

Once the patient is anesthetized and prepared, the Practitioner makes an incision on the marking and opens up the breast tissue. Then they create the pocket, which can be sub-glandular or submuscular, and use a funnel to pass the implant to the pocket via a no-touch approach.

In the case of a saline implant, it is first inserted and then filled with the saline solution. After placing and fixing the implant in position, the incision is closed with sutures while ensuring that the areola is in the upright position. Later, the wound is dressed with bandages. Then, the same procedure is repeated on the other breast.

What Does the Recovery Look Like?

Following the surgery, the wound takes around 8-12 weeks to heal and requires around 4-6 months to settle completely. Dressings can be removed after two weeks, and patients are advised to wear sports bras to support their breasts during the recovery. Temporary symptoms like pain, discomfort, and swelling can be relieved with pain medications.

Patients are advised to get implant massage exercises after two weeks and called for routine checkups every three months to monitor their recovery. Moreover, patients must wait for a month to begin their workout routine.
